Organic Farming

Blue Heron Farm is co-owned and operated by Keith Dix and Bev Lacey. We grow a large variety of fruits, vegetables, cut flowers and herbs on two and a half acres, and we do it without using chemical pesticides or commercial fertilizers. The farm is located two miles South of Basic Necessities, just off of Rt. 151.

Keith had been farming organically on a part-time basis before he retired from West Virginia University where he was Director of the Center for Sustainable Agriculture. In the ten years since 1995, he has devoted his full time to farming. Bev had many years of gardening experience before moving from Ohio to Nelson County in 2004. She brings to Blue Heron Farm an extensive knowledge of, and love for, flower growing.

Some of our farm products are distributed to 20 Nellysford area families through a weekly subscription service-a program called Community Supported Agriculture. And on occasion you can find us at the Nellysford Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings. This year, in addition to supplying fresh, organic produce to the kitchen, we are also making available for sale at Basic Necessities fresh fruits, such as strawberries and raspberries, and many varieties of summer vegetables. Bev will be putting together bouquets of freshly cut flowers for sale every day during the summer.

Floral Bouquets

Produce is available at Basic Necessities Tuesday-Friday from 10am-6pm. We also sell occassionally on Saturdays at the Nelson County Farmers Market in Nellysford.
